The regulations in Lebanon stipulate for three compulsory insurance policies:

  • Motor Insurance
    Owners of motor vehicles registered in Lebanon must obtain an insurance policy covering third party liability in cases of bodily injury and material damage. The stipulations to organize material damage are being designed.
  • Foreign Workers Insurance
    Persons employing a foreign worker must obtain an insurance policy covering death, disability, and medical expenditures.
  • Hunting Insurance
    Owners of a hunting license must obtain an insurance policy covering third party liability in cases of bodily injury and material damage.

Other insurance lines may become compulsory in the future.

Motor Insurance – Third Party Liability Bodily Injury

What you should know about compulsory motor insurance

  • This insurance is legally required for every vehicle registered in Lebanon
  • The corresponding insurance policy has standard wording and covers
  • The insurance policy must be purchased from an insurance company licensed to operate in Lebanon

Insurance Coverage

  • The compulsory insurance covers bodily injury and/or death caused by the insured vehicle to a third party.
    Injuries caused to the driver and/or the owner of the vehicle, or any person related to the owner, are not covered under this policy

Premiums and limits of the compulsory insurance coverage

The limits of the cover, and the minimum and maximum tariffs according to the vehicle’s type are as follows:

Notes:

  • The tariff is inclusive of intermediaries’ commissions
  • The tariff does not include the stamps and duties applicable as per the prevailing regulations.
    These include:
    – Proportional stamps of 5%
    – Fixed stamps of 2,000 LBP
    – Municipality taxes of 6%

Things you should know when purchasing a compulsory insurance policy

  • When purchasing your compulsory insurance policy, make sure it is priced according to the tariff specified by law (see exhibit above). An under-priced policy may not provide you with the adequate coverage in case of claim
  • It is also important that you make sure you receive two carbon copies of your policy from your insurer:
    – A copy on blank paper for your own records. This copy should be kept in your vehicle at all times
    – A copy on yellow paper for the vehicles’ registration authority (Mécanique)
